Hello Syd fans! I am so glad I found this woman. She is amazing. I'm 24..and 1st time I heard her was under the name Pearl Harbour (Pearly Gates) in the movie 'Sid and Nancy' In the movies music credits you can see that her and the Palominos contributed a song called 'Two Bullets' Yet I can NOT find ANYTHING about this song on the net...anywhere. You can hear a snippit in the scene when 'Sid Vicious' is in the bed cutting his chest.

I desperately need your help, if you can give me ANY info on this track. It's not on the soundtrack either. I'm so glad that the search for this particular song has led me onto a wonderful exploration of the magnificent glory that Syd Shaw embodies.

Hope to hear from someone soon!

Just a heads up that Syd will be playing with Matt Cartsonis and Nathan McEuen at a music festival in Santa Ynez, CA on June 13th. My now adult children grew up listening to Surprise and War and Peace and didn't discover Syd wasn't as famous as Bruce Springsteen until they were well into puberty. Syd is in the process of moving back to Los Angeles and I like to think this will be her time to shine.

Great overview, and my kingdom to get a hold of that Holsapple cassette. There's some super covers and stray collaborations that Straw has done over the years--like on Hal Wilner's Stay Awake CD, her version of Bruce's "Meeting Across the River," and "This TB is Killing Me."

I suppose most people got hip to Straw either through her duet with Michael Stipe "Future 40s" from her Surprise album. I saw her on an episode of IRS's the Cutting Edge and fell in love with her voice, her personality. I was hooked.

The first time I saw her live was in the now-closed Tower Records on Lower Broadway. When she sang "CBGBs," she ad-lib/screamed "Soylent Green is other people!" after the mention of the Heston flic in the lyric. I laughed out loud. I think our eyes met. Maybe not. Either way, she laughed. I always like to think she laughed because of me.

I just ordered the new CD. I hope she tours. Thanks for a great overview and for making me drag out my 12-inch of "Future 40s," Mr. Moody!

A correction! Syd points out that the guy's band at CBGB's was The Revlons, not the Nylons. And I can't believe I fucked that part up, because it's IN THE SONG. But that's what you get with the instantaneity of blog writing. I fall on my sword.

Who the hell is making records for adults you ask?
The answer of course is that no one is making records for adults. The music companies are making valentine cards for teenaged girls, saccharine sentiments sonically capturing the angst of an audience with over-developed bodies and under-developed minds. You missed the Straw era of the Golden Palominos, and I, sorry to say, missed the Straw era entirely. But I do remember seeing her SURPRISE album cover upon its release (late-80s?) as I strolled the noisy aisles of the now ash-heaped music chain Tower Records (Sunset Blvd.), and noted her similarity to a comedian at the time named Emo Phillips. (Her hair was longer than Emo’s but only slightly.) I never bought any of Straw’s music, nor can I name a single song, though years later I remembered seeing a picture of her cradling a Telecaster in her lap and being impressed because at the time I don’t think I had ever seen a woman holding (let alone, playing) a Tele. Straw’s bio blurb on ALLMUSIC.com says “her rootsy blend of folk-rock and blues-rock has found a home with a radio format called Triple A: adult, album, alternative.” Doesn’t that just say it, Rick? Adult is alternative music. It’s like quality is now a genre in movies. Alternative to what? Since our Republic has ceased to exist and our Empire has begun we get Bread and Circuses, look no further than the No. 1 album today, CIRCUS, Britney’s comeback (was she ever REALLY gone?). Okay, we got the circus now when do we get the free food?
