Until last night Muntader al-Zaidi, the reporter who threw a shoe at President Bush, had not been allowed visitors for almost a month. There was evidence that he had been beaten and tortured by the security detail of Iraqi prime minister Maliki. “Two medical reports conducted by government physicians within a week of Mr. Zaidi’s arrest described bruising that covered the reporter’s face and body, but was especially severe on his legs and arms; a missing tooth; a gash on the bridge of his nose; and what appeared to be a burn mark on his ear.”

A month ago, al-Zaidi’s brother explained the journalist’s anger. According the AP, al-Zaidi’s brother was finally able to visit him yesterday when the guards threw al-Zaidi a birthday party.
