Michelle – What a wonderful piece this was. This is my first exposure to your writing and I enjoyed it a great deal. Nice to see such intelligent, stylish, and snappy commentary about film (cinema?). The excerpt from Graham Greene was a revelation. It’s splendidly trenchant. Hasn’t Godard been using video (not sure about HiDef) almost exclusively for the past 20 years?

Hi Thomas–unfortunately I don’t know the answer to that, though I, like you, would love to see what he could do in that realm. Though he was an early adopter of video (1975!), I think the embrace of digital video took longer and maybe didn’t take entirely: a portion of 2001′s In Praise of Love was shot in DV, but 2004′s Notre Musique returned to 35 mm.

Michelle – thanks for sniffing out this gorgeous little truffle of Goddard interviewing Allen. I have always appreciated Goddard’s video work and wondered if you know if he has taken to HD and rich internet applications in his work at all? I think he would find great artistic playfulness doing Marxist mash-ups and hyperlinked meta-commentaries.
