Fifteen years ago Sheila Schwartz wrote her first novel. In November 2008, four months before its release, she succumbed to ovarian cancer. Her husband, Dan Chaon, wrote a beautiful essay about Sheila Schwartz’ first novel, Lies Will Take You Somewhere. We published it here, on The Rumpus, before we were getting the kind of traffic we get today. Sheila’s novel has just been published. If you’re new to The Rumpus I want to point you to this moving essay about love and writing. It’s among the essays I’m most proud of on this site.

The Rumpus.net is an online magazine focused on culture, as opposed to "pop culture." Pop culture can be hard to define and the term means different things to different people. Basically, we're not opposed to things that are popular, but we have no interest in "art" created by marketing executives. The Rumpus is not worried about being the first to break the news. We care about good writing, and we'll publish essays just because the writing is good. And we won't run a well crafted meditation alongside an actor's opinion of the war in Iraq. (more)
