Fanzine—Whoa!

Stephen Elliott bio ↓  ·  May 21st, 2009  ·  filed under books

According to Goodjobbb, Fanzine is like The Rumpus for people living in Europe and the  American South. And we agree! Wait…

They have a press and  have published a collection of Dennis Cooper‘s poems. I’m a huge fan of Dennis Cooper, particularly Frisk, Try, and My Loose Thread. And of those, particularly Frisk. This is crisp, sentence driven prose that pushes boundaries and dares you to keep reading. You know the writing is perfect, but the subject matter is so hard to stomach you want to turn away. But the writing’s too good; you can’t.

I’ve unsuccessfully tried to meet Dennis many times and have sent him at least three of my books. I asked Michelle Tea to send him my regards, as well as other people we know in common. I approached him at a reading for an autograph, and I never ask for autographs on account that autographs are stupid. But I don’t think I’m his type. If he’s like his books, and we all are in that certain way, then I’m out of his price range.

Anyway, back to Fanzine, I like their mission. It sounds suspiciously like ours. Did they steal it, in advance? They have a fiction section!

Thanks! Psyched to see y’all. I just did a little blog post on our good discovery of one another. Hope there aren’t errors in it, as I’m on a tear to get out of here for the evening! More soon. See post that post below:

Thanks! Yes, how do we make money at this? It’s a mystery. I guess we do other things? And Dennis Cooper, seriously Fisk, what a book. Maybe this is the larger question, how do we get Dennis to participate in The Monthly Rumpus? In San Francisco June 8, July 7, August 10, September 14? Gotta be a way…
