Fascinating and wonderful. I will check out the music. As for the hideousness of prep school, it was a good enough literary topic for James Joyce and J.D. Salinger, and it's good enough for me (though that may be because I attended a hideous prep school myself).

Dear "Us,"

1.) You haven't read much music writing, have you? Most of it's stinky--and not in a good way.
2.) We hadn't read Rick Moody until we read this.
3.) We didn't even know who Rick Moody was.
4.) In fact, we still don't know who he is (besides the best writer ever).
5.) We like Big Foot very much.
6.) We even still like The Rumpus (mostly because Rick Moody writes for it).
7.) We love lists!

Love,
Melissa

I believe Rick Moody's breath smells of lavender and his feet of saffron.

Thank you, Rick Moody, always a pleasure. I didn't know where you were going with the prep school guilt lead-in, but ok, I get it.

Just to forestall a certain tedious theme, let me say that I too think prep school is appalling and dull as a theme, and those of you who didn't go are lucky, in a way. But this was my life, and this is how I met John, and I can't pretend otherwise. I spent many other years fearing to write the words "prep school," because of their connotations, but the only thing more tedious than prep school is lying about prep school. So let's move on, on that front, okay?

I disagree! Every word out of Rick Moody's mouth/pen/keyboard is the best. Always.

Dear Melissa,

After having finished the article, we feel that we may owe you an apology. It wasn't as bad as we initially thought - in fact, it got pretty good toward the end there, didn't it?

We were put off by the first several paragraphs (they were about a prep school and were pretty boring). We agree that the stuff about Bill was very interesting and nice.

XO,
Us

I think this is the single best piece of writing about music and not about music, ever.
