“Since its first inclusion in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of the American Psychiatric Association in 1980, Gender Identity Disorder (GID) has been the source of controversy and debate. Some transgender people find it normalizing, while others rely on it to access medical treatments like hormones and sex reassignment surgery. An increasing number of transgender people feel that it pathologizes healthy gender variation by labeling it a mental illness, and are calling for it to be removed from the upcoming DSM-V.”

Diagnosing Difference, a documentary about the DSM’s Gender Identity Disorder, is premiering June 20 at Frameline 33, the San Francisco International LGBT Film Festival.
