Ah, yes, 1985, when I was a first year student at Southwestern University School of Law in LA. Surreal upon surreal. Yet LA has proven to be a very supportive place for me, financially, artistically, and emotionally, so maybe I'm just a surreal child.

I must be the only one who was not that high on Zeroville (though it did make me go see A Place in the Sun, which was fantastic.) I found it lacking on a lot of levels, but some of his other books, like Days Between Stations, are top notch.

Erickson is one of my favorite authors. I totally see the Lynch comparison and I second the recommendation of Zeroville.

If you're interested, I conducted an interview with Erickson for ChuckPalahniuk.net back when Zeroville came out. He gives a great interview.

Erickson's "Zeroville" was one of the one or two best novels I read in 2008. It's like the "Apocalypse Now" of Hollywood novels, and not just because a supporting character seems to be based loosely on John Milius. The ending is devastating.
