Blake Butler Goes Long

Over at HTMLGIANT Blake Butler has a long post on the failure of big publishing. He wonders if (Rumpus columnist) Rick Moody, along with Nicholson Baker (who wrote the best book of last year in my opinion), will be among the last of the great writers published for profit by commercial houses. He talks about people wanting to be challenged and engaged with a book. Then concedes that small publishing houses are doing fine.

Still, he worries about the aesthetics of some of these small presses. It stands to reason that some of these small publishing houses publishing such great work are going to become big publishing houses as their books enter the canon. So perhaps the question waiting to be answered is will they sell out when the mega-corps make their offer?
