It's like looking in the mirror, Mary - terrifying. Hadn't thought of suggesting camels - but all my family would recognise the "I've been on another planet don't bother talking" face.

I looked up and it was morning again and I'd stumbled onto this article (which of course anyone could use to peg me as a writer with a 'corporate job'). I'd say my work ethic and drive is akin to climbing a wooden corporate ladder while juggling chainsaws... The good news, I'm fairly decent with fiction so when things go south, I've found that suspension of disbelief can work in resume form. I'm really just paving the way for other poor souls with BFAs to get jobs that normally require you to know something other than how to get Final Draft on your work computer, order 120 pages of three holed paper and work on your improv skills.

Another tell tale sign, I give all my past employment endeavors catchy, yet morbid names such as 'The Dental Office of Death', 'The Heidt (yes I meant to spell it like that) of Despair' or currently 'Turn in soul now, pick up at exit interview or remember to grab as you're being escorted out'!

hilarious. and all too true based on my experience in the "real" working world. I was all that: poet, fiction writer
and a little former journalist mixed in. I feel sorry for especially one unfortunate employer that I used to pay the bills. because, like Tony--mentioned by Gae in the previous comment, I too, used the employer's computer, supplies, paper, copier, phone, fax machine and time to not only freelance, but to write fiction. sorry Cary.

Mary,

Loved it. I remember the last full time one year contract job I had. When the boss came into the office near the end of my term he told me,
"We've decided to extend your contract another three months...(noticing the look of disappointment on my face he continued)if that's what you want."

The only day I remember smiling at work was the day part of my assignment was to write a story to get a message across to children. The corners of my mouth turned up and I giggled out loud. It felt like the walls disappeared for 20 minutes or so.

I could identify with a lot of your article.
