I'm intrigued by Barry's thesis, though not yet ready to pitch my tent there. If I was, I would say that another way of thinking about what writers perhaps ought to aspire to can be found in the last lines of Joyce's "Portrait of the Artist As a Young Man." i.e. to "forge in the smithy of my soul the uncreated consciousness of my race." Possibly the literature of recent years that has won both readers and critical appreciation has more in common with the sentiment of that line than with the tone of "The Dead."
