We only had a little bit of time. If we had spent another hour on it we would have gotten a much better picture. I think she was being shy and modest. But I didn’t play Deborah Solomon with the transcript. It was just a ten minute interview fully transcribed and only edited a tiny bit.

hmm, great idea, all right. at least in principle. but i wonder how your subjects are going to feel about it. i can’t speak for claire, of course, but i bet i’m not the only one who knows her who read this and thought: really? this is CLAIRE? it doesn’t sound a bit like her. the details of the biography are hers, all right…and maybe she was being modest and shy and self-effacing? (or did you play deborah solomon here with the transcript?) would anyone guess, reading this, that claire watkins is a pretty sophisticated, savvy, very (very)(very) smart–and witty–young writer who’s already published stories and essays in places like granta? (if you rumpus readers want to read claire sounding like claire, check out the summer issue of ploughshares, where her essay “think of a recipe, think of a cake” appeared, in an issue devoted to memoir, guest-edited by kathryn harrison.) sorry, steve (i’m not being your dad here, i swear; it’s just that it’s very strange to read the transcript of an interview with someone i know so well, and whose voice i know so well, and not recognize her in it). it was nice having you here; great to see you again.
