As someone who's traveled the same path with plays, I wholeheartedly congratulated you on your DIY publishing experience. The internet has made it possible to open doors and connect to our customers directly. I agree too that sometimes I stand at the window and wish things had happened 'traditionally.' But really, knowing that I make a living, doing it my way, under my own power, is all the more satisfying...

It's so wild you write about this - I just watched the Anvil documentary last week. I was especially struck by how when the filmmaker interviewed their peers, like Slash and Lars Ulrich, those guys were grateful to Anvil for their contributions to metal and they were fans themselves. And like you say, it was amazing how, at the age of 50, the guys in Anvil kept going, purely for the love of what they were doing. In the end, it seems like they are totally successful. They are not spiritually bankrupt shells of themselves who did things they didn't want to do. I think as a writer, or an artist in any field, it's easy to get wrapped up in what the rest of the world is doing and not always follow your own inner guidance, which tells you exactly what is right for you. I think their story is a great model for the rest of us.

Really nice article. The bit about connecting with readers is especially important. I think readers often assume authors are celebrities, hoisted upon a pedestal and content to be smug. But in truth, authors, especially DIY and small press authors, really enjoy a shared word with a reader. Community building is the new book tour, I say.

Great article DeLeon. Congrats on getting your books out there and best of luck with them. It's good to hear that you haven't given up. From what I've read of your work, I've really enjoyed it. Keep at it, bro.

Peace,
Richard
