There is something in what you say, Grant, but please read over your first comment: 'unemployed' is perfectly clear in context, and I don't see any hint of 'mystical claptrap'. The fear is something many writers know well, myself included. And yes, it is hard - very hard. And gets harder, not easier.

Auster is a PEN vice-president, an organization that speaks on a variety of humanitarian related causes. He is not reticent in using his stature and reputation to speak specifically for himself on ethical issues of our day. He is blurring the lines of how to regard his life/opinions/works all on his own. Do we regard Heidegger now differently with his Nazi affiations taking on critical emphasis? Hamsun?

My disenchantment continues. Unemployed and scared when starting a new 'job.' Right. Mystical clap trap "I don't know why I write, but I do, and it's so haaaaard." "I was Brooklyn before there was, you know, 'that Brooklyn.'" Read over interview for any follow up to his defense of Polanski--raping a drugged thirteen year old who even then was saying 'no.' I've read a lot of Auster--have most of his stuff in hard cover as each came out. Really, really disenchanted now.
