Carolyn, “lotos” is an old variant spelling of the word, still current in Miller’s day (see Tennyson’s Lotos-Eaters, for example). It’s how he spelled it in the letter that Price references in the text and alludes to with the title. Therefore we kept the older spelling there as well as throughout.

Thanks for the the information on the location of some of Miller’s paintings. With LA’s Gold Line now open, I was hoping to be able to swing by the Vincent Price Gallery at ELAC today, but the bad news is that the Gallery is closed for the year (according to the person who answered their phone). Poop. I hope it is just closed for the rest of 2009 as opposed to being closed for the rest of the academic year.

Beautiful article, Victoria. As a Henry Miller fan, of both his books and art, I learned a lot. His time in Hollywood is often overshadowed by his time in Paris and later Big Sur. I think you captured his zest for life wonderfully.
