Good News About Taxing the Rich

Oregon voters voted to increase taxes on the wealthy yesterday, approving two tax measures that legislatures hope will balance the budget and keep schools open with relatively small increases on those most able to pay. If the increase hadn’t passed Oregon would have gone to a four day school week.

‘“I think the message the ‘yes’ side used, that it’s only the rich that are going to pay, that’s tough to overcome,” Hanna said. “When you spend a significant amount and stick to that message, it seemed that people believed it.”’

That message is especially hard to overcome when it’s true.
