Women don't rule in the sex club. Don G may think they do -- but that's only an illusion -- the pimps rule.

As someone whow as a hooker for ten years, I am here to tell you that sex work is not empowering, at least for women. I think that's why Antonia wants to get out of the business.

Thanks for the thoughtful interview. As someone who has lived in and around this world for decades, and who wrote about the SF clubs...The Century, Lusty Lady, O'Farrell, etc...for Hustler during the union wars, I heard many stories like the ones you told. Despite the fucked up childhoods and exploitive situations, for many this was by far the best paid job they could get, and isn't any badly paid boring or horrible work degrading? Aren't farm workers, factory workers and office drones dehumanized and for much less? And, while sex work of course partakes of, and epitomizes, a larger exploitative system, in the club there was no doubt who rules: the woman. I also met many smart women who offered incredible insights, and who remind me of you. As one stripper told me, "We're not really selling sex. We're selling compassion." As for the connection between writers, artists and sex workers, childhood damage isn't the only factor in common. A close friend of mine who is both a great artst and a long time sex worker calls her (very famous) dealer and yells: "Pimp me motherfucker!" We are all hustlers in the end.

Excellent interview, and great photos too. The one with the books especially. Maybe because it's got Carver's "What We Talk About When We Talk About Love"...
Thanks.
