Announcing our January Book Club selection
The January selection for The Rumpus Book Club is Pacazo by Roy Kesey.
Pacazo is the third Roy Kesey title published by Dzanc Books but his first novel. We were excited about the book because we’re very fond of Dzanc and they were clearly so thrilled with the book. As thrilled as we’ve ever seen them. They’re one of the few publishers we trust to be straight with us. Also, we prefer to do hardcover novels from smaller presses, as long as they’re great books.
Every Rumpus volunteer who read this novel was taken with it. We were just blown away. We think Kesey, already so respected for his short stories, is going to be known as a major novelist following the publication of this work.
Pacazo is the story of John Segovia, an American historian who lives in Piura, a small city on the desert coast of Peru. John’s wife was recently murdered, and both his search for the killer and his first tentative attempts to rebuild his life with his baby daughter begin amidst the storms of El Nino—three months of savage rains, insect plagues and collapsed bridges.
The book is 531 pages, cloth hardcover. The official publication date is February 15, 2011, but we expect to be mailing this novel to book club members before January 1. That’s part of the fun of The Rumpus Book Club, getting to weigh in early on a book before the reviewers have their say.

Excited to get my hands on this one. I’ve been in TRBC from the first month and it is great to get a selection of books (and get them early!) that might not normally cross my path. It’s great.

I wonder why Dzanc always photoshops their book covers onto the same paperback book for the product shots? Anyway, I’m excited for this one.

I have already read Pacazo. It is one of the best books I’ve read this year. I’m so happy that the Rumpus Book Club will get first crack at it. You won’t be disappointed.
