April and May Book Club Selections

By

We’re really excited about the forthcoming books for The Rumpus Book Club.

In April we’re reading The Convert, by Deborah Baker from Graywolf Press. It’s the true story of Maryam Jameelah, a Jewish girl from New York who rejected the western way of life and found herself in Islam. She joined the family of Mawlana Abul Ala Mawdudi, the founder of Jamaat-e-Islami, the radical Pakistani Islamic organization and became one of the most important writers for radical Islam.

In May we were unable to decide between Daniel Orozco’s exquisite story collection,Orientation, and Tayari Jones‘ fantastic novel Silver Sparrow. We tried so hard but we just couldn’t select one over the other so we decided to do something unusual. In May we’ll be reading both books. Some members will receive Silver Sparrow and some Orientation. It was the only available solution.

The way The Rumpus Book Club works is you pay $25 a month and you receive that month’s book roughly a month before publication. We work with the publishers to get our copies of the book before anyone else. We talk about the book all month and host an online chat between the book group and the author of the book just as the book is being released. There’s more information on how The Rumpus Book Club works here.
