reminds me of a publishers weekly review in the 1970s of a then-newly released james michener novel; “2 bits of advice with respect to this book – don’t read it and don’t drop it on your foot.”

the magnum opus at-hand should have stayed a screenplay.

I love John Sayles, but came to his novels later, and I was floored. It’s amazing that he’s able to work so deeply and with such intelligence in so many different fields, and the end product isn’t watered down, like so many films–and books, let’s be honest–are. He has a bravery and a fearlessness that’s rare in American letters and films, and this interview brought that out. Thank you, Rumpus.

Great interview. I went to seem him read in Philly and the reading itself was like a master class on how to read to a crowd, and the Q and A was like a master class on how to talk about writing. This interview really captures his eloquence and commitment.
