Terrific interview. Deford echoes a lot of my own reasons for self-publishing my first novel. Beyond the pragmatics of control and deadlines, the DIY ethic and riot-grrl ideology played heavily into my ideas of self-worth within the publishing world. It's disheartening to see so many incredible authors pour their unique self-expression into their work, only to kowtow to the ever-changing tastes of legacy publishing houses in order to get a deal.

I thought Whip Smart was fantastic. After reading this fab interview I can't wait to read Dogs of Brooklyn.

I was a prostitute in NYC for ten years. A bunch of us survivors have gotten together and formed an international online leaderless network of survivors, for friendship, support and activism. We screen carefully to sift out pimps and Johns. We are sisters and survivors. Nothing will come between us.

If you're interested go to http://secretlifeofamanhattancallgirl.wordpress.com and click on the "Survivors Connect" link.

Much love to my fellow writers and sister survivors. XO

If you have a niche (mine is femdom fiction) and find your audience, self publishing can offer a rewarding path. You have to market your own work, but loyal readers will make or break you.

Great to hear from someone who's self-published- I think all writers fall into that rejection funk at some point or another and consider doing it that way. I see the good points of each- definitely the bonus of complete control!
Thanks for this interview- congrats to both of you on your success.

I am fascinated by self-publishing. Readers should have access to all kinds of creative writing, not just what the publishing gods deem suitable. I only wish self-publishing would be taken more seriously in academia, because that is the only reason I haven't self-published yet. I keep thinking that I will write something that is not in my primary genre that I can self-publish. I want the experience of it. Beyond that, I want to be able to make an informed recommendation to my creative writing students about different options they have to publish beyond pirate operations that charge $20 reading fees but don't even bother to send you a form email rejection letter. Thank you for this interview.
