I wonder what Cheryl thinks of the Dwight Garner review? I raced out and bought the book as result and loved it.

I bought this book as an audio book about 3 days after it was published. I had no idea at the time it had just come out. It was for a long solo drive from Albuquerque, to Oregon (coincidentally), and looked like it might fit the bill. My mother died at a similar age to Cheryl’s (both her and her mom’s ages). And I have always dreamed of a long trek on the PCT (I have only hiked short stretches here and there). Cheryl’s book floored me. I was completely lost in it during my drive – the hours and miles flew. A week later, I bought a text copy and read it out loud to my wife. Thank you, Cheryl.

I just finished the book so this was perfectly timed to answer my burning questions. Wild is the best book I’ve read this year! Cheryl is an amazing storyteller… and I’m very happy to hear our Sugar will be back soon!

Hiking alone: 127 Hours.

It’s risky and not recommended, but so are lots of really awesome things.

(I haven’t been hiking since I was 16, though. My body doesn’t work in those ways any more.)

Looking forward to the book.

With regards to the issue of women hiking alone:

I’m a guy who’s done a lot of solo hiking and backpacking (although nothing epic like the PCT). It isn’t a good idea for a man to hike alone; there’s all sorts of trouble that would be life-threatening when solo and much simpler to handle with one or two other people along.

On the other hand, hiking alone may have been the best bad idea I ever had.

I’ve just got the book and am really looking forward to reading it
