I was absolutely delighted to read this post, because putting together that birthday gift for Bridget -- as well as its subsequent video on youtube -- was one of the coolest experiences of my career. Getting to narrate for a living is an absolute blessing, and I am grateful for it every day of my life. Thanks so much, Sari, for getting in touch all those years ago. To me, it's the gift that keeps on giving!

Oh, and by the way Kevin, I've booked jobs based on my ability to swear convincingly. Seriously; odd but true. I chalk it up to misspent youth.

When I'm drawing (which is most of the time), I am an audio book/podcast addict. I've never heard Scott Brick, but I look forward to checking him out. There's something to be said about a great reading voice--likewise, a terrible reader can ruin a great story for me. (And thank you for posting that adorable video. What a fantastic gift! Mr. Brick sounds like a great guy.)

I too listen to audio books on my commute. It doesn't change my reading habits: book on back seat for doctor's visits and oil changes, book in upstairs bathroom, book downstairs and one in my gym locker.
Listening to Flavia de Luce (Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie) was delightful. Cold Mountain was musical. GK Chesterton was educational.
Lee Child and Jeffrey Archer make the commute a breeze.

You know that whole idea of different styles of learning? Audio books are just another avenue to literacy. People I know and love don't like the act of sitting down and reading but they love to listen to books while they do other things. My son listened to the Harry Potter series while playing with Legos. My partner built a chicken coop while listening to The Grapes of Wrath. It's all good.

Great great essay. I'm a huge fan of audio, though like you, I don't have enough of a commute these days to listen in the car.

Robert Petkoff and Simon Vance are my absolute favorites. Just great stuff. Like Bridget said, I could listen to them recite the dictionary.

I love this. I'm also a huge fan of audiobooks. I also really love old radio plays. Some books are completely meant to be heard. I highly recommend listening to Elmore Leonard books they are great to read but even better to hear.
