I have read Sicario, Down by the River, Contrabando (Bowden/Ford) and just finished Murder City. Having grown up in San Antonio then moving to near Corpus Christi, I grew accustomed to going to Mexico as a child and until about 15 years ago, and was always comfortable there. I also had a great uncle who was a General in the Mexican Army, and worked in their government in the early 1900s in Mexico City and Monterrey. The old timey Mexico when it was safe for us to go there... I speak Spanish fluently and so was always treated very nicely by the Mexicans. They are very appreciative and kind to those who take an interest enough to speak in their language while in their space.

Since there is a place in my heart for the Mexicans, I am very interested in their plight, and have spoken to so many from there who have escaped. It is one of the saddest things I have seen in my life to see a country be completely destroyed from the inside out. It makes me even sadder and very angry and frustrated that our government assists in the destruction of this country by funding the "bad guys" and laundering the drug money in our banks, then being cruel to the people trying to escape. These people should be considered political asylum seekers, but instead are jailed, killed, or sent back to be killed in the homes they sadly had to leave, through no fault of their own.

I don't understand why nobody believes what is going on there, when there is so much evidence of it being thrown in our faces daily. Our attorney general funded them and provided guns for the criminals there. How sick is that? Mostly I don't understand why nobody is aware or believes what is happening to this beautiful country to our South.

Only Charles Bowden could speak so eloquently of murder and death. Excellent questions and answers. The trick is in implementing the solutions that Bowden describes. Mexico deserves better than what we have given them: our greed and hunger for drugs.

Great interview. It is amazing how few Americans follow what goes on so close to our borders. Illegal immigration becomes the smokescreen for the failed drug policies and economic policies of our country. After reading Bowden's books one cannot ignore the carnage that too infrequently gets ink on the pages of our newspapers.
