I instantly became hooked on Vader & son, but didn’t know much a out Jeffrey Brown beyond that. Now I MUST read more. This was a great interview, and besides learning more about JB, I now have a list of books of his to shop for. I’m excited.

Thanks for the nice words about the interview. And your daughter sounds swell. As for recommendations, Jeff Brown has a bunch of books that could be suitable for her, including his “cat” books and the superhero parody comics, among others. In addition to that, I’d say you should start her off with the basics: “The Prehistory of the Far Side” (which was a huge influence on me), “Peanuts,” Shel Silverstein, James Thurber, Matt Groening’s “Life in Hell,” “Calvin & Hobbes,” etc.

I really enjoyed this interview, Jory. I have a daughter who has been making “books” about a particular character for a couple of years now, and until I read this piece, I didn’t really think of what she produces as being in the vein of a comic strip. She is very talented (other people think so too, so I know I’m not just a crazy American Idol-type parent), and she is only nine years old. The illustrations are awesome and the story lines she creates are funny. I had just never thought of introducing her to comics until I read this.

I’d welcome any suggestions for comics that would be fun and inspiring for a nine year old girl and budding artist to read.
