Wow what an interview! I have fallen head over heels for Martha Davis. She is a legend, a true artist that none of today’s up and comers can hold a candle to. Now if only we can get her to play the Capitol Theater in Wheeling. WV.

The Motels were critical to the emerging L.A. sound of the late 70′s. Their shows were always captivating and so alive. I have only great memories of them.

“Mere”, “domestic”, “passive”? I first discovered Laura Nyro via Eli & the 13th Confession (in 1969). Nothing before or since has ever come close to that. Janis Joplin was dead before I graduated from high school in 1971. And so forth and so on. Your dates, and the conclusions you draw about what happened when, are curious. As a woman listening to music before and after 1975, do tell me what I don’t understand about the revolution that happened to me, Rick. Rick…that’s a man’s name, isn’t it?

It’s a delightful interview that made me feel like I know her now. And after it I immediately used MOG to pull up “Total Control” and “Suddenly Last Summer” and “Only the Lonely” and especially “Apocalypso,” which has a wonderful sax solo. “We had nothing. We had fucking Rolling Stone magazine.” We scratched pictures of our favorite musicians on the walls of our caves using pointed sticks and our own dung and then we had to pause to flip the vinyl record over. It’s a miracle we survived.

Iris, I think the Motels mostly only play on the West Coast because someone would have to PAY for them to come east. And I think the salad dressing ended up with avocado instead of mayo. As for the dog: there were a lot of dogs, and most of them had been rescued, as I understand it, and therefore they had various problems. I would have to ask Martha, but as I recall it, this guy had a host of health issues.
