I have been both the cheated-on friend and now am married to a friend’s ex, as the “cheater.” (Though no cheating was involved either time, I hope. Just the breaking of the friend contract). It was only when it happened to me, or rather I chose to let it happen, that I forgave the past. I am glad maturity brings understanding, if we let it. Great essay.
