If it helps any, you can find like-new (or faded and worn) copies of the 1980s "Anne" for a pittance on places like Amazon and AbeBooks. Searching online bookstores for Green Gables Bantam Starfire Paperback should turn them up.

It looks like there were at least two different cover designs under the same ISBN though - you might have to ask the seller which color it is.

Heather - I always feel sort of melancholy in those instances myself. Last week I found a copy of short stories by Chekhov and on the inside was inscribed, "Ken - I just know you are going to whip cancer! Here are some great stories to keep you company."

I like to think Ken whipped cancer and just didn't care for Chekhov.

My wife and I owned a used book shop simply called, "The Bookstore"- we stocked 100,000 books... every one of them was a friend. It's funny how you begin treating them as if they were your children. The spines of the dust wrappers are seen in one's dreams at night. Miss it a lot. Best education we ever received.....

It always makes me sad when I read the inscriptions in books that are heart-felt and yet the book has been so quickly discarded. Things like "Grandma and Grandpa are so proud to have you in the family! 2010" and here it is a year later in the used book store.

Having said that, I love the fact that the book carries a history with it, a sense of being read and loved, or not loved, but passed on to someone who will love it.

my daughter managed a used book store for a while. the store would receive huge ship-sized wooden crates of books, each crate large enough to hold about five people sitting cross-legged and about 16 standing. each was full of books, loosely thrown into it. the owner of the book store chain had no knowledge of books or their worth. my daughter unearthed several first editions and interesting, unique books that she would bring to the owner's attention, and tons of crap. there were so many books that were sent to scrap or were moved farther down the line to other used book places. i would be incredibly sad to see the demise of "hard" books, but judging from those crates, which are a mere sample of the thousands upon thousands of crates out there, i doubt it's going to happen in your lifetime. hopefully you will get to live with all your favorites until you die.
