Middle Cyclone was released just before my former live-in boyfriend descended into a dark period of depression, self-medication and bi-polar mania. That winter, my last in New England, was a cold, confusing mess. Bears came down into town. A homeless man tried to crawl into our bedroom one night and my boyfriend ran out into the snow in his underwear. He never found the man. It was the last time I felt safe with him. I played middle cyclone on repeat.
Baby, why’m I worried now,
did someone make a fool of me
‘fore I could show ‘em how it’s done?
I cried at this lyric one too many times. I left. I started over alone in the west, in the sun. I saw Neko Case live in a grove of eucalyptus trees last year and felt strong and new. Music is a marker and a gift. You convey this beautifully. Thanks for reminding me.
