Thank you for the interview, and Peter, thanks for your honesty. Storytelling is hard to do well, at least for some of us, and I like the way you talk about getting yourself out of the way to let the story happen, like, maybe you're the main actor in the story, but you're not as important to the story as you might think you are. The story came first, and you just happened to be there to witness and maybe participate in it. Never mind that you think the story happened to you, it could have happened to anyone, and that's why well-told stories are so interesting to people, because, as you said, Peter, the storyteller is a vessel, or a vehicle, for the story to be brought into the room. Anyone who's listening to the story is listening as though it were happening to them, and in a very real sense, it is. That all makes sense, and just like anything else, storytelling is a practice. Like writing, like performing, and so on. And thanks, also, Peter, for sharing that tidbit of advice about frustration with not always gaining altitude; riding the plateau, and not forgetting that if you need to you can glance back sometimes to remind yourself how far you've come. That's good, and that helps.
I hope I can make it to New York one of these days and hear you tell a story.

Thanks, Jessica! It's part of an Oxfam/local group partnership project called Sanctuary in Wales, to develop women's confidence and advocacy skills. I'm so honoured to be doing it. And so delighted to have discovered The Rumpus - how have I only just discovered it?! (via Dear Sugar's amazing Column #72).
