This was one of my favorite pieces this year in the Rumpus. I feel just as in awe of Atwood and her craft as the interviewer. Great conversation. I like that you focused on the "absent presence" in her work, and also women's issues and the hackable culture. This will have me thinking for some time.

Great interview and so natural, that conversation with Margaret Atwood, well done. She defies genrefication, I would love to be like that as an author. She reminds me a lot of Doris Lessing.I completely agree with that analysis and have met that as well many times--the betrayal by friends and all of a sudden being on the outside and having no clue what brought that on. Thanks, Johanna van Zanten

Fantastic interview! I especially like this:

Atwood: Writing is alone, yes, but I don’t think it’s lonely…ask any writer if they feel lonely when they’re writing their book, and I think they’ll say no…

Rumpus: That’s true, because the characters are your friends during that period.

Atwood: The characters are your friends during that period, and plus you’re in a total megalomania control freak state.

LOL -- awesome!
