Oh jesus, I wish I hadn't read this. I only skimmed down it because it was mostly just fawning. Saunders is extraordinarily talented and I love his writing, but "kisskiss", "muahmuahmuah", just get a motel room with him if you all can't stop swooning long enough to discuss the work! Of course my eyes had to fall on that bit about 'Buck' and that poor, neglected horse. It was obvious during the encounter filmed in the documentary that he was confused by the unfamiliar environment and needed more time to relax before they tried to work with him too much, and the second trainer was NOT following Buck's technique properly to avoid intimidating the horse, but they overloaded him until he snapped, and just because he couldn't make significant improvement in ONE DAY, that rotten excuse for an owner decided that he needed to be put down. That was so horrifying to watch, as soon as the guy entered the pen after Buck and approached the horse, it was obvious how it was going to end, but impossible to look away from the poor animal. Buck also failed that horse by not pulling out the handler when it became obvious that he was only upsetting the animal.
THE OWNER WAS THE ONE WHO NEEDED TO BE PUT DOWN!!! I hope the next horse she buys (and ruins) tramples her to death. Some people are lower than animals, much much lower.
