Friday 4/21: Women & Children First welcomes Kay Ulanday Barrett for the Chicago launch party for their poetry collection, When the Chant Comes. Kay will be joined by H. Melt, Francesca Royster, and Darien R. Wendell. 7:30 p.m., free.

Sunday 4/23: Women & Children First hosts young adult authors Brittany Cavallaro, Jilly Gagnon, and Stephanie Strohm for a panel discussion on complicated relationships in young adult literature. 4 p.m., free.

As always, the Uptown Poetry Slam is going down at The Green Mill. Open mic starts at 7 p.m. followed by the slam itself. $7, 21+.

Tuesday 4/25: Join Julie James for a Chicago book party for the release of The Thing About Love at Lady Gregory’s. Complimentary beverages and light refreshments will be available. 6:30 p.m., free.

Thursday 4/27: This month’s Applied Words performance, hosted by the Guild Literary Complex, includes multimedia pieces curated by Ladan Osman, an activist and poet. Several artists from the project will display their work including Amina Ross, A.J. McClenon, Zachary Nicol, and Tavia K. David. Filmfront, 7 p.m., free.

Nadine Kenney Johnson will be at The Book Cellar to discuss her new memoir Of This Much I’m Sure. 7 p.m., free.

Stephanie Danler will discuss her novel, Sweetbitternow available in paperback—with WBEZ’s Nerdette Podcast’s Greta Johnsen. Wine and cheese will be provided by Pastoral! Women & Children First, 7:30 p.m., free.
