Sunday 1/14: As always, the Uptown Poetry Slam is going down at The Green Mill. Open mic starts at 7 p.m. followed by the slam itself. $7, 21+.

Monday 1/15: Claire Hartfield discusses A Few Red Drops: The Chicago Race Riot of 1919. She will be joined in conversation by Judith Stein. 57th Street Books, 6 p.m., free.

Tuesday 1/16: Visit City Lit Books for a tribute to Denis Johnson in conjunction with the release of his final book, The Largesse of the Sea Maiden. Local authors Rebecca Makkai, Juan Martinez, Nami Mun, Adam Morgan, and Amin Ahmad will participate. 6:30 p.m., free.

The Open Door Reading Series at The Poetry Foundation continues with readings by Chicago High School for the Arts’s Tina Boyer Brown and her student Jupiter Dandridge along with Kenyatta Rogers and his student Damayanti Wallace. 7 p.m., free.

Wednesday 1/17: Visit The Book Cellar for Local Author Night. Readers include Kevin Theis (Invading Nirvana), Tori Telfer (Lady Killers), P.M. White (Buzz Ride), and Michael Moreci (Black Star Renegades). 7 p.m., free.

Thursday 1/18: Alicia Eler reads from her new book, The Selfie Generation. Women & Children First, 7:30 p.m., free. Pre-register here.
