Julia Phillips was the first female producer to ever win an Oscar. She won it in 1973, when she was 29, for The Sting, and then went on to produce Taxi Driver and Close Encounters of the Third Kind. A drug aficionado her entire adult life, she really spiraled to the depths when she was introduced to freebase by some random dude who became her boyfriend. If you want to read a totally epic, out-of-control memoir by one of those drug addicts who is so scarily brilliant and idiotic at the same time, and has no boundaries, check this shit out. There is a pantload of picaresque gossip in here about all her friends and collaborators, including Steven Spielberg, Goldie Hawn, Martin Scorsese, Francois Truffaut, Al Pacino, Richard Dreyfuss, Robert Redford, Joan Didion, EVERYBODY. Phillips died of cancer when she was only 57, but left behind this blazing personal history about getting movies made and doing tons of blow in the ’70s.
