The Rumpus Los Angeles Lo-Fi Film Festival is a direct result of an investigation into film festival submission fees called The Great Film Festival Swindle. We found some great festivals like Slamdance and Dances With Films but mostly we found the film festival circuit broken beyond repair. Doing research for that article we came across some movies we really wanted to see. Why not watch them together? It will also be the world premiere of After Adderall, a movie about what happens when James Franco makes a movie about you.
SATURDAY, JULY 30
SCREENING: Search Engines: Directed by Russell Brown
Search Engines is a social satire about the essential relationship of the modern era: human beings and their phones. It’s Thanksgiving, and family and friends have gathered for the annual American celebration of togetherness and gratitude. When reception mysteriously goes dead throughout the house, each character must deal with his own crisis: marriages are tested, values questioned and everyone’s future is thrown into the balance. If the human experience is one of search—for meaning, purpose and love—this is a story of how technology is leading us further astray. tickets
Search Engines premiered at Cinequest Film Festival.
SCREENING: S&M Sally:
Directed by Michelle Ehlen
Winner of 5 best feature awards. A provocative queer feature film comedy about sex, love, and the most important question of all—who’s on top?
When Jamie finds out her girlfriend Jill has spent time exploring BDSM, her insecurities about falling behind in the bedroom push her to propose that they start going to underground clubs. Jamie decides to use the pseudonym Sally. “Sally” assumes she will take the dominant role in their escapades, with Jill as her submissive, but Jill has ideas of her own.
Meanwhile, their friends Lola and David start dating the polyamorous bisexual Sebastian, who proposes to have a threesome. They quickly agree without planning to follow through, expecting the other one to back out first so they can save face with their new boyfriend. A provocative and hilarious ride, S&M Sally details the unexpected journey that happens when your insecurities push you outside of your comfort zone, leading you down a path for which there is no going back. tickets

Candy injects the “fun” in her dysfunctional life. When your brother is found by a neighbor naked and drunk, you’re stuck with a caveman of a boyfriend, you have a dickhead boss, and the madness of everyday life competes with your mother’s need to appear “normal,” you have to peek between the cracks to find the warm rays of hope. But, maybe normalcy is just a construct for other people. And, maybe breaking out of the institution is more important than fitting in. After years of trying to save those she loves, it’s time for Candy to save herself. tickets
