Mythic Betty Davis Sessions Released

For years, people have been referring to lost sessions featuring Betty Davis and her former husband Miles Davis playing with bending genres, with Betty Davis introducing the jazz giant to Jimi Hendrix and the sounds of psychedelic rock. Recorded from 1968-1969 at Columbia’s 52nd Street studios, the mythic sessions laid the groundwork for the mix of jazz and psychedelia that later coalesced in Miles Davis’s radically innovative Bitches Brew.

Mid-’60s psychedelia and all its acid and white witches has been mined pretty intensely in the last decade or so, but Jessie Jones’s solo debut exists almost as if to say that’s no reason to stop. Formerly of Orange County’s Feeding People, which was getting some significant attention before breaking up in 2013, Jones took a couple years off to travel the country and discover a much less garage-dependent take on a ’60s sound.

Australian musician Kevin Parker’s band, Tame Impala, is known for blending musical influences like psychedelia and lo-fi, but Parker’s proficiency as a songwriter only adds to his resume. On “The Less I Know The Better,” off the album Currents, a catchy bass line propels Parker’s voice as he sings about his longing for another man’s partner:

She said it’s not now or never
Waiting years we’ll be together
I said better late than never
Just don’t make me wait forever
