Dan Weiss’s Morning Coffee

Here’s your weekends worth of circus sideshow banners.

You know who was really inconvenienced by Japan’s earthquake last year? Underwater creatures.

It turns out pollution is really bad for your memory, ladies.

Let us now watch the white house be (re)constructed.

I guess goat accents are a thing.

  1. Oh … you meant real goats. I thought you were doing a Sound of Music shout-out.

  2. Pollution is probably bad for everyone.

Most scientific studies are performed with ALL-MALE subjects. The commonly stated reason for this is to “reduce variables.” The results of such studies are almost NEVER qualified by “in men” (unless there’s a prostate involved). The assumption is always that it is a study whose results are informative of all people.

Yet in the rare once-in-a-while case that a study is performed using all-female subjects, the results are always announced with a qualifier: “in women.”

No one believes that male results can be more accurately generalized to the whole population than female results can. It’s simply a nasty little tic of habit in our verbal culture.

But the implication is that men are “people” and women are not.

I hate to see this kind of BS on the Rumpus. 🙁
