This week in San Francisco, plants kill people (Wicked Plants – the author speaks), people kill people (Assassins, a musical!) but music…oh, music will help us all to live again (Dead Westerns play the Hemlock).
Monday, May 30th – You might be hungover today. That’s ok, it’s alright, drink some water, avoid the light. But tonight, music: Songwriters Unplugged at Yoshi’s.
Tuesday, May 31st – Have you ever noticed the buildings here? I just watched Howl, and he says, in the movie, that you can go walking, here or in New York or anywhere maybe, and just feel this overwhelming sense of buildings. By the end of the day, you’re in tears. John King is going to talk about San Francisco and it’s buildings today at SPUR. Info. (via Johnny Funcheap)
Wednesday, June 1st – I know I told you to check out the “Wicked Plants” exhibit over at the Conservatory of Flowers already, but perhaps you haven’t yet. Perhaps you did go and you were enthralled, fascinated and titillated by it! Either way, this Wednesday is a special day to head back to the Conservatory – the author of the New York Times Bestseller that inspired the “Wicked Plants” exhibit will be there! Get there by 7pm to hear Amy Stewart, author of “Wicked Plants: The Weed That Killed Lincoln’s Mother and Other Botanical Atrocities”, scare the crap out of you with tales of ninja assassin plants and the like. $10 for the general public: Tickets.
Thursday, June 2nd – Keeping with the theme, Ray of Light theatre presents “Assassins” (they mean humans in this one). Time and space bend to unite assassins of The President of the United States…nine of them. Imagine what happens next, oh wait, you don’t have to: Tickets.
Friday, June 3rd – Dead Westerns, Slow Trucks and Pony Village grace the Hemlock with their rocking presence this Friday. If you want a night full of happy, up-and-down-jumping, sweaty smiling, this is where you should be. The Dead Westerns celebrate their new 7″ and Slow Trucks presents their new full-length album. Come and play. Details.
Saturday, June 4th – The Galleria de la Raza hosts the Out of Necessity writing workshop, “Conflict in Fiction” – learn how to “resolve stories without having characters kill themselves, live happily ever after, betray the rest of the story, or do anything too terribly obvious”. More Information.
Sunday, June 5th – Tonight, a fantastical, salon-like affair hosted by “Virginia Woolf” and populated by dead eccentrics. Throughout the performance, audience members are served various food items – taken directly from the narrative. Hosted by McSweeny’s editor Jesse Nathan and composer Chris Janzen – Intrigued? Info.
Happy June, lil’ bugs.
