MONDAY 1/16: As part of the 26th Annual Brooklyn Tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., BAM is offering a free viewing of The Black Power Mixtape 1967—1975, directed by Göran Hugo Olsson, and featuring leaders of the Black Power Movement, as well as commentary from prominent African-America artists and activists. Bam Rose Cinemas. 1 p.m. Free.
TUESDAY 1/17: Seems like the right temperature outside to go to a new show about mountain man and bear tamer Grizzly Adams. Joe’s Pub hosts Grizzly Adams: The Musical, by Corn Mo and Nick Jones, which tells the story of Adams’ life from San Francisco to the Lower East Side of New York City. 7 p.m. $15.
WEDNESDAY 1/18: Reverend Billy and Savitri D. will read from their new book, The Reverend Billy Project: From Rehearsal Hall to Super Mall with the Church of Life After Shopping. Book Court. 7 p.m. Free.
THURSDAY 1/19: Writers Maira Kalman and Daniel Handler read from their new book, Why We Broke Up, which chronicles a teen romance from start to finish. The reading will include a Breakup Board for audience members to contribute their own stories and fun prizes. WORD. 7 p.m. Free.
FRIDAY 1/20: The Nervous Breakdown will feature authors and poets at the KGB Bar. Hosted by contributor Tove K. Danovich, the night will feature Rachel Kramer Bussel, a columnist for Sexls Magazine; Greg Olear, senior editor at TNB, author of Fathermucker; Shya Scanlon, fiction reviews editor for TNB, author of In This Alone Impulse; and Diana Spechler, author of Who By Fire. 7 p.m.
SATURDAY 1/21: PopRally kicks off its 2012 season with electronic dance music by Blondes, a Brooklyn-based semi-improvisational dance music using live electronics. The night will include a sound installation and DJ set by Juan MacLean. MoMA. 8:30 p.m. Performance begins at 9:30. $18 in advance, $23 at the door. Admission includes an exclusive exhibition viewing and cocktails.
SUNDAY 1/22: Writers Read presents a reading featuring Jennifer Michael Hect, Doubt: A History; Maggie Dubris, In the Dust Zone; poet Deb McAlister, associate editor for poetry at Tupelo Press; Therese Eiben, co-editor of The Practical Writer: From Inspiration to Publication; and Gene Albertelli, fiction docent at the Brooklyn Museum.
