Monday 1/14: The Shout, Oakland’s monthly live storytelling event, is back for 2013. This month features five locals telling ten minute true life stories, with time for audience members to join in. $5-$20 suggested donation.
Tuesday 1/15: Erica Lorraine Scheidt is at Green Apple Books for the launch of coming-of-age novel Uses For Boys. Scheidt’s first novel has been hailed as “haunting, and un-put-downable.” Free, 7pm.
Wednesday 1/16: Quiet Lightning kicks off 2013 with free food, drinks, music, and readings by J.E. Freeman, Matt Leibel, Shideh Etaat, William Taylor Jr., Ariel Fintushel, Sarah Natalie Webster, Sarah Kobrinsky, and Dawn Gross. $5 suggested donation, 6-9pm, Sports Basement (Bryant).
Thursday 1/17: Michael Ondaatje is in conversation with Dr. Abraham Verghese at the Jewish Community Center. 7pm, $20 or stream it.
Friday 1/18: Books Inc. Opera Plaza hosts its first book exchange of the year, 6pm onwards. Diatribe Art Show celebrates women in the arts, media and social activism, and tonight its highlighted with performances by Frankie Boots and the County Line. Free, 50 Mason, 10pm.
Saturday 1/18: Yo La Tengo plays an Amoeba free show at 3pm. Celebrate Robert Burns Night at Edinburgh Castle Pub, replete with traditions honoring Scotland’s national poet: “featuring bagpipes, the haggis ceremony, whisky lashings and the poems and songs of Robert Burns.” 8pm.
