Friday 8/26: 57th Street Books hosts a Showcase of Queer Chicago Poets with Jay Besemer, H. Melt, and Evan Kleekamp. 6 p.m, free.

Join the Bitter Women Book Club at City Lit Books to discuss After Claude by Iris Owens. 6:30 p.m., free.

Head to Women & Children First to celebrate the paperback releases of Music for Wartime by Rebecca Makkai and The Life and Death of Sophie Stark by Anna North. 7:30 p.m., free.

Saturday 8/27: Since we’re light on events this week, visit The Field Museum for Free Admission Day to load your brain with amazing new facts to tell your friends about at the next reading. There will be dinosaurs. Opens at 9 a.m., free with Illinois ID.

Sunday 8/28: As always, the Uptown Poetry slam is going down at The Green Mill. Open mic starts at 7 p.m. followed by the slam itself. $7, 21+.

Tuesday 8/30: Local author Shawn Shiflett launches his novel Hey, Liberal! at the Greenhouse Theater. 7 p.m., free.

Wednesday 8/31: The Poetry Foundation’s Pop-Up Poetry series at the Art Institute of Chicago continues with a reading from Quraysh Ali Lansana. The Modern Wing’s Griffin Court, 12 p.m. Free for members or with museum admission.

Thursday 9/1: Join Amy Gentry as she reads from her new novel Good as Gone at The Book Cellar. 7 p.m., free.
