Thursday 5/11: It’s the Books and Beer Pop-up Bookstore! Minnesotan authors will be drinking beer and selling their books. Grab a pint, chat with the writers, and find your new literary fav. Pen Pals: James McBride edition. James McBride will talk about his latest book, Kill ‘Em and Leave: Searching for the Real James Brown. It’s an authorized biography of legendary musician James Brown, and it’s gonna be a good talk. Hopkins Center for the Arts, 7:30 p.m., $40-50.
Friday 5/12: Local authors Patricia Kirkpatrick and Mary Losure will be reading from their work. Banfill Locke Center for the Arts, 7:30 p.m., free.
Saturday 5/13: Check out the “Beyond Imagination” Writers Workshop Day! It’s all day event for new, emerging and advanced writers, featuring six 80-minute workshops in poetry and prose. The workshops will be led by local, award-winning writers, and there will be an opportunity for participants to read from their own work. Writers include Becca Barniskis, Paula Cisewski, Robin Romanski, Katherine Schaefer, Kris Woll, and Diego Vazquez. Count on discussion, exercises, prompts, and lots of fun during each workshop. Psychologist and author Tom Glaser will be signing copies of his book Full Heart Living: Conversations with the Happiest People I Know. Barnes and Noble Calhoun, 1 p.m., free.
Here’s a thing: Ok you Minne-SciFi nerds, this one’s for you: there’s a Minnesota Science Fiction Society. That’s right. Minn-StF is a non-profit dedicated to the appreciation of science fiction and fantasy. They have meetings, but you should know that these so-called “meetings” are actually parties. So check it out, then nerd-up and join in—Minn-StF has been around since 1966, and they mean serious (party) business.
