Chris Gavaler

Chris Gavaler is a professor of English at Washington & Lee University, comics editor of Shenandoah magazine, and series editor of Bloomsbury Comics Studies. He has published over fifty short stories and creative nonfiction essays in over three dozen journals including New England Review, Prairie Schooner, and Hudson Review; two novels, including School for Tricksters (SMU 2011); and seven books of comics-related scholarship, including The Color of Paper: Representing Race in the Comics Medium (Ohio State University Press 2026). His comics and other art appear in INKS, North American Review, and Ilanot Review.
