Katy Ryan is the founder of the Appalachian Prison Book Project, a volunteer nonprofit that mails free books to people in prison in six states. She co-edited This Book is Free and Yours to Keep: Notes from the Appalachian Prison Book Project, awarded the 2024 Weatherford Award for Nonfiction. She is an English professor at West Virginia University where she directs a higher education in prison program.
