Rachel Somerstein is an associate professor of journalism at SUNY New Paltz. Her essays and reporting have appeared in the Boston Globe, The Hairpin, Longreads, the Washington Post, WIRED, and Women's Media Center's "Women Under Siege," among other publications. She's published scholarship on photography in the peer-reviewed journals Journalism, Journalism Practice, and International Journalism Gazette, and she's discussed collective memory and mass-mediated images with Brooke Gladstone on NPR's On the Media. Rachel holds a PhD in mass communications from Syracuse University and an MFA in creative writing from NYU. She lives in New Paltz with her family.
