Sandy Hates Books

Hurricane Sandy hates books, according to the name of a relief fundraiser at the powerHouse arena in Brooklyn this Saturday.

Although it seems unwise to anger Sandy any further (and perhaps unfair to expect a meteorological phenomenon to have an appreciation of literature), the event is completely packed with amazing writers and artists: Teju Cole, Tea Obreht, Jennifer Egan, Adrian Tomine, and the list goes on.

The 826 Valencia Write-a-thon

The third annual 826 Valencia Write-a-thon is this coming weekend, Sunday, August 26.

Grab your pens and pencils, computer, or typewriter and head down to 826 for a full day of inspired, 826-powered writing. The event is a fundraiser for 826 Valencia’s free student programs and works not unlike any other walk — or mara — thons you may or may not have participated in: You gather pledges from friends and family and write until your brain or arms fall asleep, or until 8:26 PM.

Shelves to Fill

Inspired by last year’s video by Melissa Jackson, librarian at Ballou Senior High School in Washington DC, Guys Lit Wire held two book fairs that helped Ballou move from having a library with “less than one book for each of its 1,200 students at the beginning of 2011 to a ratio now of two books per student.”

Hoping to further decrease the school’s “literary deficit,” GLW is kicking off another book fair.

Notable San Francisco, This Week: 7/19-7/25

This week: mutant cowboys at the Roxie, The Botany of Desire, a Litquake cocktail party, roller disco, and more film festival goodness!

Monday 7/19: Bounty hunters, vigilante justice, and good old fashioned wild west gun-slinging.  The Dead and the Damned has all that and ravenous mutants, and it’s showing at the Roxie tonight as a part of SF IndieFest’s Another Hole in the Head Film Festival, which features all the underground fantasy, scifi, and horror films you could possibly want.  Tickets $10-11.50, 9pm @ 3117 16th Street.
