The Guardian editor Alan Rusbridger dives into the complicated issues that arise when newspapers attempt to unpack the most complicated topics. In April of 2008, the mega British corporation Tesco sued The Guardian over an article that raised questions about Tesco’s offshore holdings and tax avoidance practices. Tesco accuses Guardian of two counts of libel and two counts of malicious falsehood. This legal entanglement functions as a parable of the challenges newspapers face–challenges even more acute given their new liquidity problems. The costs of the most thorough journalism may further imperil the news organizations themselves.
