This week in San Francisco: three bicyclists make a pit stop on their 12,000 mile journey, thus taking care of your exercise quotient for the year. Also, the International Body Music Festival, the Lower Haight Holiday Art Walk, and two lovely literary events at 826 Valencia
Monday 11/30: Beginning in May of this year, Susie Wheeldon, Jamie Vining and Iain Henderson set off on a 12,000 (yes, thousand) mile bike ride around the world. Today, their travels bring them to San Francisco, where they will talk about climate change and the ways in which solar energy can sustain our energy needs (the trio generate the solar power necessary to run all of the equipment they travel with, allowing them to keep a blog of their travels). Free, noon @ the Ferry Building.
Tuesday 12/1: Learn about music sans instruments as the International Body Music Festival kicks off tonight. See dancers, singers, and human beatboxes from around the world gather and perform over the course of the week at various Bay Area venues. See the IBMF website for a performance schedule.
Wednesday 12/2: Artists Rene Garcia Jr. and Liz Miller have come together to create Everything is Beautiful, an exhibit that explores the many ways in which we search for gratification. Hosted by Project One gallery, the opening reception takes place tonight between 7 and 10pm. Project One, 251 Rhode Island St.
Thursday 12/3: Get into the holiday spirit (and distilled spirits) at the first ever Handmade Ho Down Craftstravaganza at 1015 Folsom. Enter a charity raffle, see live art demos, and pawn off your gift wrapping duties while supporting Draw Bridge, a non-profit organization that brings the arts to homeless children. 6pm-midnight, 21+ @ 1015 Folsom.
Friday 12/4: Kick off your Friday night on Haight and Scott, and make your way through the Lower Haight Holiday Art Walk, organized by Lower Hater gallery. From 7-11pm, enjoy outdoor art and music, the likes of which hasn’t been seen since the summer of love and get a head start planning your holiday wish list. All ages, Haight St. between Scott and Webster.
Saturday 12/5: See Rumpus writers in action at Wish You Were Here, with readings by Sona Avakian, Sarah Fran Wisby, and Elissa Bassist. The fun all starts with a reception at 5.30pm and readings at 7, and is sponsored by the San Francisco Arts Commission at 826 Valencia.
Sunday 12/6: Join award winning bilingual author Jorge Argueta, Lemony Snicket Illustrator Lisa Brown, and 826 Moderator (and Echo Park Time Travel Mart creator) Mac Barnett for 826 Valencia’s last Adult Writer’s Seminar of the year. $40 gets you an evening of insider information about developing, writing, and publishing children’s literature while supporting the educational programs at 826 national locations. 6.30-9pm at 826 Valencia.
