Earlier this week, Sean Lovelace at HTMLGIANT asked about the last time you read a book you didn’t really want to read, and while I was coming up with my answer, it occurred to me that I haven’t finished anything I didn’t enjoy since I was in grad school. Since then, I’ve had a lot more time to discover books on my own.
So my question to you is: what’s the last book that you found on your own, without any prodding from a friend or book review or anything along those lines, that you loved? Leave your answers in the comments.

Honestly, and I probably shouldn’t admit this, but I just finished grad school, and the first thing I did when I was finished was listen to (yes, I didn’t even read) two Sookie Stackhouse novels. It was awesome.
All Fall Down by James Leo Herlihy. Actually, pretty much everything by him. I stumbled onto his work in the weirdest most random way, and found myself enthralled, so, now, anything with his name on it I read.
The Caine Mutiny by Herman Wouk and The Once and Future King by T.H. White. Just found them at the local library quarterly booksale. They were familiar, of course, due to their respective movies, but I hadn’t thought of them as still relevant reading. I think they both have aged well and kept me spellbound.
Pal Joey by John O’Hara is another one I’ve found recently that is still has a vibrant story and characters.
Mangel’s The Library at Midnight–still haunts me.
